Jake Tapper '91, the chief Washington correspondent for CNN, wrote his 2012 bestseller to highlight what he termed the "deep-rooted inertia of military thinking." Like the book, West Point grad Rod Lurie's immersive film adaptation delivers both gripping action sequences and a scathing critique of military hubris that puts soldiers' lives at risk.

While President Obama talked of withdrawing troops, Army brass inexplicably ordered a small unit of 53 U.S. soldiers (Orlando Bloom, Scott Eastwood, Caleb Landry Jones) to hold down Combat Outpost Keating. Located at the base of three steep mountains, Keating was indefensible from the 300 Taliban fighters who descended from above on October 3, 2009. With a keen understanding of the mechanics of battle and an overriding humanism, The Outpost brings this little-known story to vivid, heartstopping life.
