Incident on School Street

To the Dartmouth community:

Just before 10 p.m. last night, a 19-year-old man was shot on the sidewalk outside the Christian Science Reading Room on School Street, about a block away from campus. The victim, who is not affiliated with Dartmouth, was taken by police to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition as of early this morning.

The campus community was ordered to shelter-in-place as soon as reports of gunshots were received by Dartmouth Safety and Security officials. Students, faculty, and staff received a DartAlert notification by phone, text message, and email to shelter-in-place shortly after 10 p.m. and received updates thereafter. The shelter notification was lifted in consultation with police on Saturday at 12:46 a.m.

Report of the shooting resulted in a large police response from departments throughout the Upper Valley and from New Hampshire State Police. Police investigated several reports of gunfire-like sounds at other locations in Hanover but found nothing to indicate that shots had been fired in any other location.

Hanover police are continuing to investigate the shooting and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has first-hand knowledge of the situation to contact them at 603-643-2222. We will post updates on the Dartmouth homepage as we learn them.

We are all grateful for the quick actions of first responders on campus and across the region. They worked through the night to ensure our safety.

I urge students who need some support at this time to contact campus safety and security at 603-646-4000 to speak with a dean or counselor on call. Faculty and staff may contact the Faculty/Employee Assistance Program (F/EAP) at 844-216-8308.

Let us continue to be there for one another.

Sincerely,

Philip J. Hanlon '77
