New Tobacco-Free Policy

To the Dartmouth community,

We are writing today to inform you of a new Tobacco-Free Policy going into effect on March 18 that will prohibit smoking and the use of tobacco products in all facilities, grounds, vehicles or other areas owned, operated, or occupied by Dartmouth. This new policy will apply not only to all students, faculty, and staff, but also to consultants, contractors, and other outside visitors to our campus. The policy covers both indoor and outdoor areas.

We are implementing this policy because Dartmouth is committed to providing a healthy environment for our community. Given the growing evidence that tobacco use is a risk factor for a variety of life-threatening diseases, including COVID-19, we'd like to provide every opportunity possible for community members to protect themselves.

Please take time to familiarize yourself with the new policy ahead of its implementation.

For those of you who may wish to quit smoking and need assistance in doing so, there are many campus resources available.

The Dartmouth College Health Service provides tobacco-cessation treatment for students including prescriptions for medications and counseling, and can be reached at (603) 646-9401.  The Student Wellness Center also provides tobacco-cessation support for students, and can be reached at Student.Wellness.Center@dartmouth.edu or (603) 646-9414.

Faculty and staff can access a variety of tobacco-cessation resources, as well, through the Wellness at Dartmouth Office at (603) 646-3706.

If you have further questions about the new policy, please see the detailed FAQ and list of resources available at http://sites.dartmouth.edu/tobaccofree.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. We sincerely hope this new policy will contribute to a healthier campus environment for all.

Sincerely,

Philip J. Hanlon '77
