Dartmouth will commemorate Veterans Day with a buffet breakfast, lecture, and panel discussion recognizing the accomplishments and sacrifices of those who have served. The Dartmouth community is encouraged to help honor America’s veterans by attending these and other events on Nov. 9 and 10.

Veterans Day is a time to pause and think about those who decided to serve, “whether it’s your family members, your friends, or your community members,” says Will Burroughs, Tuck ’25, who is a judge advocate with the Navy.

“It’s nice to take a minute and think about what it means to be a veteran, what the experience is like for those people, and to learn more about the current group of veterans,” Burroughs says. “Ask, what did you like about service? Why did you decide to serve? I think you’re going to get some unique perspectives and good stories.”

The Dartmouth lineup features historical perspectives, including Matthew Delmont, the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of History, who will discuss his book Half American: The Heroic Story of Black Veterans Fighting World War II at Home and Abroad, from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy, Room 003, and online.

The conversation will be moderated by Leslie Butler, vice chair of the Department of History.

And recent veterans will share their stories during Military and Microbrews Tuck Tails, sponsored by the Tuck Veterans Club, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 9 in Stell Hall. Tuck School of Business students representing several branches of the military will take part in the panel discussion moderated by Joseph Hall, Tuck’s senior associate dean for teaching and learning

Burroughs says he’s excited about the event, which offers an opportunity to talk with veterans outside of the busy hustle of day-to-day life.

“It’s a deliberate time to sit and connect with a small part of the school to get a better understanding of a global experience,” he says.

Dartmouth community veterans, families, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the annual Veterans Day Recognition Breakfast from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Class of 1953 Commons North Dining Hall. Registration is required.

At 4:45 p.m. that day, the Dartmouth Veterans Day Retreat and Drill Ceremony will take place on the Green. Dartmouth ROTC cadets will lower the U.S. flag per military regulation in the execution of a formal retreat ceremony.

In addition, Dartmouth veterans will connect with the broader community on Nov. 8 and 9, visiting classes at Hanover High School to discuss their experiences.

The Baker Tower bells will toll at the eleventh hour of Nov. 11.
