Preparing for a Provost Transition

Dear members of the Dartmouth community,

As we announced this past spring, David Kotz '86 will conclude his term as Dartmouth provost in June—a role he has held since 2021, and which he generously agreed to extend for an additional year.

I am truly grateful for Dave's ongoing dedication to the institution. Dartmouth has benefited greatly, as have I, from his steady leadership during the first year of my presidency, and from the empathy, creativity, and collaborative spirit that he unfailingly brings to his work. Following a well-earned sabbatical, Dave will continue his research and teaching as the Pat and John Rosenwald Professor of Computer Science.

We are initiating the search for a new provost this fall, and I am pleased to share that the search advisory committee will be chaired by Brendan Nyhan, James O. Freedman Presidential Professor and professor of government. His fellow committee members are:

  • Paul Argenti, professor of corporate communication, Tuck School of Business
  • Bala Chaudhary, associate professor of environmental studies
  • Riley Flores, PhD student, Thayer School of Engineering
  • R. Scott Frew, chief financial officer
  • Odette Harris '91, trustee
  • Josh Keniston, senior vice president of capital planning and campus operations
  • Lisa Marsch, director of the Dartmouth Center for Technology and Behavioral Health and the Andrew G. Wallace Professor and professor of psychiatry, Geisel School of Medicine
  • Clark Paolini '25
  • Carl Renshaw, professor of earth sciences
  • Alice Ruth, chief executive officer, Dartmouth Investment Office
  • Scott Sanders, associate professor of French
  • Jomysha Delgado Stephen, executive vice president for strategy and special counsel to the president
  • John Zhang, professor of engineering, Thayer School of Engineering

The arts and sciences faculty representatives on the committee were selected following a joint nomination effort by the Committee on Priorities and the Committee Advisory to the President. All other search advisory committee members were recommended by deans or their peers. John Muckle '99 and his team at Isaacson, Miller have been enlisted to help the search committee identify and vet outstanding candidates.

The provost is Dartmouth's chief academic and budget officer, who plays a pivotal role as my strategic partner in elevating our core academic mission. We are seeking a visionary leader who can help shape the future of Dartmouth, and we welcome the nomination of exceptional candidates—internal or external— from anyone in the Dartmouth community.

Please submit your nominations here. Together, we will identify an exceptional new provost.

With best wishes,

Sian Leah Beilock

President
