Dartmouth Jazz & Symphony Orchestras: The Temp Watch Party

Two Dartmouth student ensembles collaborate to present a major new work that joins jazz and classical music — and Shakespeare.

Last year, The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra and Coast Jazz Orchestra joined to present a new oratorio from composer Taylor Ho Bynum and librettist Matthea Harvey which joined jazz with classical music — and Shakespeare. Harvey, winner of the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and a 2017 Guggenheim Fellow, used erasure processes on Shakespeare's The Tempest, extracting words and phrases to craft a new narrative — a story of contemporary labor relations and a rebellion against corporate hierarchy that is engaging, witty and ultimately uplifting.  

The Coast Jazz Orchestra, under Bynum's direction, and the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Filippo Ciabatti, performed with an exceptional group of guest soloists: vocalists Kyoko Kitamura and Michael Mayo, saxophonist Jim Hobbs, trombonist Bill Lowe, drummer Tomas Fujiwara and violinist Erica Dicker. This was the first time that these two ensembles have collaborated in their over 100 year long history.

This year, The Hop will rebroadcast this important work entitled The Temp. Members of the DSO and Coast Jazz Orchestra will join the live chat, answer questions and provide their insights on the performance.  Learn more here.
