Walt Disney's newest animated feature follows the extraordinary Madrigal family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a wondrous, charmed place called Encanto. Its magic has blessed every member with some special gift—except one: Mirabel. But when Encanto is threatened, it may be up to the ordinary Mirabel to save them all.

With crisp and assured direction, a bounty of catchy new songs by the ubiquitous treasure that is Lin-Manuel Miranda and fantastic voice work from the ensemble cast, Encanto is a vibrant, visual delight. Even with these fantastic feats of wizardry, the Madrigals, with all of their relatable family dynamics, are believably loving, funny and flawed. The whimsical dose of magic realism set amid the lush greenery of the Colombian mountains benefits as much from the purity of the storytelling as the stunning power of the visuals. D: Jared Bush & Byron Howard, US, 2021, CC
