Women and Protest in Iran: A Teach-In with Professor Golnar Nikpour

On September 13, 2022, Iran's so-called Guidance Patrol, often called the "Morality Police," arrested 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Amini for an apparent violation of the country's dress code for women. A comatose Amini was hospitalized hours later with signs of severe physical trauma. As reports surfaced from eyewitnesses who claimed that Amini had been brutally beaten by police, protests erupted around the country. When Amini died in the hospital three days later, protests further escalated. In the subsequent days, protests have continued across virtually every city and province in Iran, with shouts of "death to the dictator" and videos of women burning their hijabs circulating widely. The government crackdown has led to dozens of further deaths and thousands of injuries and arrests. Despite this, the protest movement has shown no signs of abating.
