Lobate soil patterns found in the Arctic and on Mars strongly resemble a dripping fluid. But what are the necessary and sufficient ingredients for them to form? Are they icy envoys of cold climates past and present, or are they simply granular versions of a classic fluid instability? We begin to take a crack at explaining these enigmatic features with theory, remote sensing data, fieldwork and physical experiments.
