The Democracy Summit is pleased to welcome Senator Rob Portman ‘78 to discuss his experience serving in the United States Senate, his legislative accomplishments as a Republican representing the state of Ohio, and his views on issues ranging from the Economy to the Environment to same-sex marriage, the war in Ukraine, and the status of American democracy. The event is on April 22nd at 5:15 PM in Rockefeller 003 and a recording will be available a day after the event on the Dartmouth Political Union's YouTube.

The Democracy Summit, jointly convened by The Dartmouth Political Union, John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, and The Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences, will host several lectures & debates on the state of democracy from winter 2023 through winter 2024.

Speaker Biography: Robert J. Portman ‘78 served as a Senator for the state of Ohio from 2011 to 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Portman also served as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from 2006 to 2007, the United States Trade Representative from 2005 to 2006, and a U.S. representative from 1993 to 2005, representing Ohio's 2nd district. As a member of Congress, some of Senator Portman’s most notable achievements include passing a balanced budget agreement, welfare reform bill, supporting the North American Free Trade Agreement, and co-sponsoring the Respect for Marriage Act codifying same-sex marriage into federal law.
