Professor Michael Kimmage will launch our discussions with a presentation entitled “The Four Axes of the War in Ukraine: The Origins of a Global War. The talk is drawn from Kimmage’s forthcoming book Collisions: The War in Ukraine and the Origins of the New Global Instability.

 Michael Kimmage  has wide-ranging academic, policy, and think tank experience. His expertise is on the former Soviet Union, the transatlantic relationship, and the history of U.S. foreign policy. His particular area of focus is the U.S.-Russian relationship. Kimmage is a professor at the Catholic University of America, where he is the chair of the history department. Dr. Kimmage has published three books to date: The Conservative Turn: Lionel Trilling, Whittaker Chambers and the Lessons of Anti-Communism (Harvard University Press, 2009); In History’s Grip: Philip Roth's Newark Trilogy (Stanford University Press, 2012); and The Abandonment of the West: The History of an Idea in American Foreign Policy, published by Basic Books in 2020. A frequent contributor to Foreign Affairs, the New Republic, the National InterestInternationale Politik and War on the Rocks, Kimmage is chair of the advisory board at the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute, and he serves on the advisory board of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. From 2014 to 2016, Kimmage served on the Secretary of State's Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State, where he held the Russia/Ukraine portfolio.
