The latest film from Jane Campion (The Piano) is a slow-burning gothic melodrama featuring one of Benedict Cumberbatch's most remarkable transformations. A charismatic but often cruel rancher, Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother George (Jesse Plemons) brings home a new wife Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and her son Pete (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. This exquisitely crafted film with its unhurried rhythms continually shifts as plangent notes of melancholy, solitude, torment, jealousy and resentment surface. Campion is in full control of her material, proving her ability to illuminate hidden truths and let us see what was hiding in plain sight all along. D: Jane Campion, UK, 2021, CC
