Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his young nephew (Woody Norman) forge a tenuous but transformational relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown together in this delicate and deeply moving story about the connections between adults and children, the past and the future. Writer-director Mike Mills (Beginners) makes this genre feel new and insightful, as if he's one of only a few filmmakers who has tackled the complex dynamic between adult and child. Johnny's tentative dip into family life artfully captures the tedium, terror and confounding ecstasy of parenthood, but it more eloquently conveys the pain and discovery involved in simply trying to do one's best. D: Mike Mills, US, 2021, CC
