Title: Cornu Ammonis Cornucopia: Hippocampus 2.0
Abstract: Hippocampus or Cornu Ammonis used to be simple: neurons encoded space and this was the GPS system of the brain. But, small cracks in this simple story appeared long ago: it was difficult to find clear place cells in primates; instead the human hippocampus is critical for episodic or autobiographical memories without any involvement of space. Decades of debate has not resolved the issues. However, a cornucopia of recent hippocampal discoveries point to potential resolution and an exciting new hypothesis, aka Hippocampus 2.0, that can explain these differences. This is not only of fundamental scientific interest but crucial for developing cures for learning and memory related disorders including dementia, where many therapies work in rodents but not in humans.
