Bio: Stephen Doig is currently senior strategic advisor to the Irving Institute for Energy and Society and a senior fellow at Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI).  His career experiences include academic researcher (Mayo Clinic, Caltech), management consulting (McKinsey & Co.) senior advisor to the U.S. Air Force on energy efficiency, managing director at Rocky Mountain Institute, and research director at the Irving Institute at Dartmouth College.  In combination, these experiences have given Stephen an ability to provide an integrated perspective that combines technical, operational, business and investment knowledge and experiences.

Abstract: Even as the cost of solar and wind energy become cheaper than conventional power, large challenges remain to decarbonize hard to abate sectors including fertilizer, steel, shipping, aviation and other heavy industrial processes which make up a significant fraction of the world’s carbon footprint.  A promising solution is Hydrogen which can be used to reduce Iron, create low carbon ammonia for shipping and fertilizer, synthesize fuels, for high temperature processing and for storage.  Both “green” (made from renewable electricity) and “blue” (made from methane with carbon capture and sequestration) Hydrogen are being actively pursued.  In this seminar we will review the current state of green Hydrogen production and discuss the key research and development needs including catalysts, membranes, power conditioning, electrolytes and storage.
