In this character-driven thriller, a professor (Thandie Newton) is drawn into an escalating battle of wills with two trespassing hunters. Director Julian Higgins in person!
Thandiwe Newton stars as a Black professor in a remote college town—not unlike Hanover— whose confrontation with two hunters trespassing on her land escalates as she refuses to back down. The gorgeous cinematography of snowy Montana gives the viewer an immediate sense of her isolation as she grieves for the recent loss of her mother, navigates her all-white, predominantly male colleagues, and struggles to enlist the support of the local sheriff before taking matters into her own hands.
By weaving an intersectional awareness into the classic Western, Hanover native Julian Higgins' remarkable film invites us to examine the legacy left by that genre's themes—and gives Newton a richly layered character to showcase her talents. D: Julian Higgins, US, 2022, 1h42m
