"How To Do Things with Media: Interventions in Nineteenth-Century Studies", a workshop

Photographs, Telegraphs, The Penny Press: the introduction of a dazzling array of new technologies transformed visual, acoustic and textual communication in the nineteenth century. These innovations made representations available to the public which these new media also called into existence. Early photographic technologies, the telegraph, and the penny press not only altered the availability of representations, but also unsettled aesthetic heirarchies and opened up new possibilities for the meaning of representation itself. This Venn Grant funded workshop brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars who work on understanding those transformations. The two-day event will culminate in a plenary round table which is free and open to all.
