Title: "Engineering a fault-tolerant quantum computer with bosonic codes"

Abstract: Bosonic codes offer a path toward hardware-efficient quantum error correction (QEC) by redundantly encoding quantum information in the large Hilbert space of a harmonic oscillator. The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code is particularly promising, yielding in a circuit-QED architecture a QEC gain of 2.3, well beyond the break-even point [1]. In this architecture an ancillary qubit is used to stabilize GKP codewords in a high-Q microwave cavity, a process which is very sensitive to ancilla bit-flip errors. In this talk I will discuss two projects aimed at mitigating the detrimental effects of these ancilla bit-flip errors on the quantum information encoded in GKP states. These projects build toward the broader goal of engineering a fault-tolerant quantum computer using bosonic codes as building blocks.
